What Is Business Networking And How Will Business Networking Improve Your Business?

What Is Business Networking And How Will Business Networking Improve Your Business?

Business networking is the activity of meeting and creating relationships of trust with people for business purposes.
Business networking is very often a very important part of information gathering, sales, recruitment and other key aspects of business activities. Through business networking the company can get hold of information that is vital for its development, meet people that will make decision which impacts the company and have good chances of getting new clients. Business networking is not only about shaking hands and exchanging business cards, the aim is to create a relationship of trust that benefit all parts of the companies growth, profit and general development.
When networking for business the amount of information shared between people is by far greater than in written or online communication and business networking also provides a good opportunity to bond with others which online networking – in our opinion – will never be able to replace.

The Difference Between Business Networking And Professional Networking

The difference between business networking and professional networking is only related to that the purpose of business networking is strictly related to business while professional networking in general has a wider professional scope.

Business Networks

There are many business networks available both on- and off-line; and even though we are certain that real world networking never can be replaced by online networking, online can still be a good place to initiate contact and it is a very good place to maintain a business network. The places where to network for business are endless and ranges from the obvious business networking event to all other places where people meet, from hotel lobbies to meeting the other parents at your kids football matches.

Succeed With Business Networking At Your Workplace

To succeed with business networking it can be good to undertake some preparations, the most basic ones being to look into what kind of venue you are going to, what the theme or business orientation the event has and which people are most likely to be there. We have written more about preparations for successful business networking in previous blog posts, those will give you more details about how to prepare.
We have written about business networking many times before on this blog and for the time constrained reader we can recommend the short blog posts “A one-minute read about how to build and maintain a strong network” and “Top 10 tips for successful networking”.

Business Travel To Ukraine Increasing - Average Five-Star Hotel Room Rate In Kyiv Up 15% In 2018

Business Travel To Ukraine Increasing - Average Five-Star Hotel Room Rate In Kyiv Up 15% In 2018

Germany’s Ambassador to Ukraine does not see the EU applying new economic sanctions on Russia for the Kerch Strait naval attack.

“There is no consensus to go ahead with sanctions,” Ernst Reichel, the Ambassador, said Wednesday at a sanctions conference organized by Kyiv’s New Europe Center. “The EU debate is less about new sanctions, but about defending existing sanctions,” he said. Asked about EU support for boycotting products from Russia’s Novorossiysk port until freedom of navigation returns to the Azov, he warned: “Excessive demands that have no chance of being fulfilled -- they can have a harmful effect on the party making the demands.”

Ukraine’s two ports on the Sea of Azov have moved to four-day work weeks and have cut staff,

Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan posts on Facebook. Before the Russian inspection policy started six months ago, one of the ports, Mariupol, had 3,000 employees. As of Wednesday morning, he wrote, 29 vessels were awaiting passage through the Kerch-Yenikalsky Canal, and 11 more ships were anchored at or near the two ports.

With the EU Council to vote next week on renewing Ukraine-related economic sanctions against Russia,

Kyiv’s New Europe Center has produced a study indicating that the economic price paid by the EU amounts to ‘three cups of coffee’ for each EU citizen. While EU farm exports to Russia, dropped by EUR 5.4 billion from 2013 to 2017, EU farm exports to other markets increased three times as much, by EUR 18 billion. During that five year period, EU trade with Russia dropped by an average of 2.3%. Oddly, the countries most skeptical about sanctions, suffered less than the average: Germany – 1.3%; Italy – 1%; Greece – 0.7%; and France - 0.6%.

Ten days into martial law, Dragon Capital sees minor impact on business:

“The martial law, while coming as a negative surprise, will have limited adverse impact on the Ukrainian economy, in our view. The F/X market’s reaction was muted; the 2019 election schedule was unaffected; and overall, day-to-day business and private life is set to continue as usual barring a major military flare-up. Russia’s potential blockade of shipments via the Azov Sea would cause only limited and temporary export losses for Ukraine.”

Clearing a hurdle for billions of dollars in IMF and World Bank aid, Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy signed the 2019 state budget on Wednesday.

He tweeted: “This guarantees us the macro financial support of our international partners.” Timothy Ash writes from London: “Let's hope this is IMF compliant, so the Board can meet on/after Dec. 10, and sign off on the first tranche ($1 billion?) of the new Stand By Agreement. Good news for Ukraine.”

Addressing solar and wind energy, a hot spot for foreign investment in Ukraine, the Rada is to  review today a draft bill that would start in 2020 an auction system for ‘green energy.’

Under the bill, approved Tuesday by the Rada energy committee, the tariff for solar power would drop by 25% in 2020, followed by annual decreases of 2.5% through 2023. For wind, the ‘green tariff’ would be cut by 10%, followed by annual decreases of 1.5% through 2023. ProZorro plans to hold pilot auctions next year.

With question marks hanging over green tariffs after Dec. 31, 2019, “the whole industry is under threat of stopping,”

Alexei Orzhel, chairman of the Ukrainian Association of Renewable Energy, tells UNIAN. Marina Petrov, the EBRD’s deputy director for energy, supports the bill, saying: “This is a modern way of financing green energy. This is what we see in almost all countries.” As a result of a boom of foreign investment in wind and solar, Ukraine has installed green energy capacity of almost 2,000 MW – 57% solar and 27% wind -- reports the State Energy Efficiency agency.

State gas producer UkrGazVydobuvannya opened in November its fourth field in Kharkiv region this year.

Using Schlumberger’s Petrel software to model the field, UGV estimates recoverable gas to be 3.7 million cubic meters. The three other Kharkiv fields add up to an additional 4.5 million cubic meters of recoverable gas. UGV  supports the government’s move to electronic tenders of exploration permits, saying it needs 20 permits a year to meet its exploration and production goals.

A regular China-Poland container train will travel through Ukraine next year,

Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelyan and Polish Infrastructure Minister Andrzej Adamczyk told reporters in Kyiv Wednesday. Omelyan, who was in Beijing and Shanghai last month, said: “We plan that the number of such trains will be about 1,000 per year.”

With train passenger traffic to Poland running at double last year’s numbers, Ukrzaliznytsia plans to open two new rail routes next year to Eastern Poland:

Lviv-Lublin, about 250 km, and Nizhankovychi, Lviv region, to Przemysl, Poland, about 15 km. So far this year, Ukrzalinytsia has carried 300,000 passengers on its Kyiv-Przemysl route – double last year’s level. Kyiv-Warsaw has carried 27,500 passengers this year, also double last year. Improving service to Western Poland, the state railway launches on Saturday a dedicated Wroclaw car for its daily Kyiv-Wroclaw train, a 1,200 km distance.

Since Friday, Ukrainian border guards have barred admittance to over 600 Russians, mostly men,

Petro Tsyhykal, head of the border guard service, tells UATV. On Nov. 30, as part of the one-month martial law regime, President Poroshenko said Russian male visitors, aged 16 to 60, would be subjected to special scrutiny. Tsyhykal said several women also have been refused entry, explaining: “If there is information regarding a woman, or she cannot explain the purpose of her visit, we deny admittance.”

With the ‘ban on Russian men’ well publicized inside Russia, the flow of Russians into Ukraine since Friday has dropped by two thirds,

Tsyhykal said. In reprisal, Russia has been barring Ukrainians, “even groups of 40 to 50 people, mostly men,” Tsyhykal said.

In a sign that business travel to Kyiv is strengthening, the average daily room rate in five-star hotels increased by 15% this year,

compared to 2017, hitting EUR 150 per day, Colliers International reports. The occupancy rate for Kyiv’s top end hotels remains unchanged, at 45-50%, Natalia Chystiakova, director of consulting for Colliers, told reporters. Four-star hotels charge an average of EUR 80 per night and have 50-58% occupancies. Three-star hotels charge an average of EUR 45 and have 55-65% occupancies. Occupancy rates for these two categories of hotels inched up 5% this year.

Retail Lending In Ukraine Could Grow by 40% in 2019

As of Monday night, ships in the Azov were going overwhelmingly to Russian ports,

with only five going to the Ukrainian ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk, according to https://shiptracker.live/ The site tracks ships by using information from their GPS transmitters. According to fragmentary reports, few ships have docked at Ukraine’s two ports since Russian forces seized three Ukrainian Navy vessels on Nov. 25.  From Nov. 25-27, the number of ships in and around the strait increased 2.5 times, from 167 to 421, according to Ukraine’s Ministry for Temporarily Occupied Territories.

German Chancellor Merkel asked President Putin to restore freedom of shipping to the Azov.

“The freedom of shipping traffic in the Sea of Azov...must be ensured,” she told reporters after meeting Putin on Saturday in Buenos Aires. “Russia must stick to this.” Concorde Capital’s Zenon Zawada writes: “It’s entirely realistic to view Russia as seeking control of the Azov Sea and preventing ships from traveling to Ukrainian ports, which has already been accomplished to a large extent.”

By blocking shipping in the Azov, President Putin seeks to damage Ukraine’s economy,

Iryna Gerashchenko, first deputy chair of the Rada, said in Kherson, the Black Sea region. Speaking to the Regional Development Council, she said: “One of the components of Putin's hybrid war against Ukraine is the economy. And the Azov blockade is an attempt by the Russian Federation to destroy yet another piece of the Ukrainian economy.”

Trains can replace ships to minimize the impact of a Russian blockade of the Kerch Strait,

Dmitry Sologub, deputy head of the National Bank of Ukraine, tells reporters  Monday. He said the monthly “influence” is “on the scale of tens of millions of dollars.” By some estimates, 20% percent of Ukraine’s steel exports pass through the ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk. Steelmaker Metinvest tells Interfax-Ukraine that two ships carrying its steel passed through the Kerch early last week. Referring to rail, the spokesman said: “In case of delays during the passage of the Strait, the group has the opportunity to redirect logistic flows to the Black Sea ports.”

The EU and the US should consider banning from their ports Russian ships originating from the Sea of Azov,

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, a top candidate to replace Chancellor Angela Merkel as leader of the Christian Democrats, tells Reuters. Reflecting a growing national security debate in Germany over the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, she says Berlin could reduce the amount of gas to flow through the pipeline.

Contributing to Germany’s debate, Prime Minister Groyman told newspaper Die Welt:

“Nord Stream 2 is a form of disguised war against Europe…we now are considering this project as Russia's geopolitical weapon.”

Groysman was in Berlin Thursday to open a German-Ukraine business forum, attended by 400 business and political

leaders from Germany and Ukraine. Trade between Ukraine and Germany, Ukraine’s largest EU trading partner, rose by 8% in the first eight months of this year, hitting EUR 4.7 billion.

Retail lending in Ukraine could grow by up to 40% next year,

according to five bankers interviewed by Interfax-Ukraine. Oleg Pakhomov, retail business director of Credit Dnepr Bank, says predicts up to 40% growth, saying: “In 2019, consumer loans will remain the main component and driver of growth in the loan portfolio of banks and the main direction of retail lending: they now form more than 80% of all retail loans in hryvnia.”

The volume of bank deposits in Ukraine has not changed appreciably since martial law was implemented one week ago,

Kateryna Rozhkova, first deputy head of the National Bank of Ukraine, briefed reporters on Monday. "There are no outflows in the banking system,” she said, citing figures through Thursday. “The volume of term deposits did not change in the banking system as a whole, if we compare the state a week before the introduction of martial law and the latest data that we saw.”

Business in Ukraine leaders are gauging the impact – if any -- of martial law,

according to a survey story by Interfax-Ukraine. The Union of Ukrainian Entrepreneurs has asked member companies to report any restrictions on business activity in the 10 border regions placed under martial until the end of December.

Igor Gumenny, President of UBC Group, the Kharkiv-based refrigerator manufacturer, posts Monday on his Facebook page:

“There is nothing tragic. Meetings, visits of business partners, credit lines, insurance, international contacts are simply postponed. Business and investment negotiations are suspended until after New Year and the Christmas holidays. I hope martial law is only for a month.”

The Ukrainian government needs to have a direct dialogue with business

to “find effective and constructive ways to implement these measures, so that they have the least possible impact on the economy,” urges Denys Khrenov, acting general director of AB InBev Efes, the brewing company.

Oleg Pakhomov, retail business director for Credit Dnepr Bank, says his bank is not changing lending rules,

adding: “We believe that the introduced martial law regime in the current situation should not drastically affect the rights or financial condition of clients. Similarly, Galina Heilo, board chair of Aybox Bank, says martial law has not yet affected the bank’s lending plans.

To fill seats, Europe’s low cost airlines will have to heavily promote Ukraine among Europeans as a vacation destination

and Kyiv and Lviv as “city break’ weekend destinations, Denis Antoniuk, former head of the State Aviation Service, tells Interfax-Ukraine. Praising the arrival last month of Ryanair and Wizz Air’s expansion of its Ukraine route network, Antoniuk warns: “Most routes from and to Ukraine just do not have enough passengers, unless serious measures are taken to generate new passenger flows.” Both Ryanair and Wizz Air have powerful marketing systems that in recent years have flooded little known cities like Sofia, Bulgaria, with EU budget tourists looking for new, inexpensive destinations.

Air passengers through Lviv this year are up 47% through November yoy, to almost 1.5 million,

the airport reports on its Facebook page. Of the nearly 125,000 passengers in November – up 57% over last year – almost all – 87% - flew internationally. This year, the number of foreign cities with direct scheduled flights to Lviv has tripled – to 35. On Dec. 14, Wizz Air starts service to a 36th destination – Frankfurt-Hahn.

Citing Ukraine’s martial law,

Bulgaria Air has suspended for two weeks its flight from Sofia to Odesa. The twice a week flight was launched last February.

Definition, Importance And Benefits Of Professional Networking

Definition Of Professional Networking

“Networking is a deliberate activity to build, reinforce and maintain relationships of trust with other people to further your goals. Professional networking is simply networking focused on professional goals.”  Business Networking is about real relationships and real trust, which are very hard to establish in an online only connection.

The Purpose Of Professional Networking

  • The purpose of professional business networking is to build and maintain professional or business relationships over time.
  • To achieve goals related to business or professional development

The Benefits And Importance Of Professional Networking In Business

  • To be “top of mind”, the first person others think of when a certain profession or industry is mentioned.
  • To build relevant professional- or business-relationships with other people. With “relevant” is meant that the person you connect with can actually add value to you or your business.
  • By being part of a business or professional network you get access to knowledge the other people possess, especially tacit knowledge. Tacit knowledge - as opposed to formal, codified or explicit knowledge - is the kind of knowledge that is difficult to transfer to another person by means of writing it down or verbalizing it. Being part of a network also give you access to information that people preferably would not put in writing which can help you avoid people that are underperforming on the labor market for example.
  • That you get access to people. Once you get to know another person more personally, which is the whole idea with professional- or business-networking, it will be easier to connect with that person also in a business setting. They will at least give you that meeting in private that you want to have.

How To Build, Develop And Maintain Professional Business Networks

To build and maintain a professional business network you need to:
  • Be present at events and other functions that are platforms for professional business networking. You also need to have regular activity on social and professional media platforms. You need to do this to make sure you stay top-of-mind so that you gain new contacts and maintain the once you already have.
  • Be active. Only by actually communicating with people can you build and maintain your network. First out is a greeting like “Hello, how are you? My name is…”. Then you engage in some small talk.
  • Show charisma. Smile, show energy and engage in positive communication. People have to see and remember you.
  • Share your knowledge and contacts with others. By sharing you create value for people around you and they are more likely to engage positively with you and remember you in a positive way. Sharing is a very good fuel towards a relationship of trust.
  • Stay relevant. Learn new things; stay up-to-date with events and new developments in your profession. Share the new knowledge with your network, or at least let people know that you have it.

Professional Networking Activities

Some very useful professional and business activities are to:
  • Communicate
  • Share content
  • Make people feel comfortable
  • Give people positive attention
  • Make sure people remember you in a positive way

What Are Some Business Networking Skills?

The most important skills for successful professional and business networking are to:
  • Master small talk
  • Have enough courage to take action
  • Maintain a high activity level
  • Have endurance to maintain relationships created

Examples Of Events For Professional And Business Networking

Some examples of events for professional and business networking are:
  • Events named “professional networking events”
  • Conferences
  • Educational events
  • Trade fairs
  • Offices and other places of work – often forgotten
  • Social events

Professional Networking Sites

This site, Fryday, is the online side of the real-world international network of professionals that Fryday is. Going forward this site will develop more and more to business-to-business networking.
In fact many of the social networks out there are also very suitable for professional networking.
  • Some are:
  • Facebook

  • Instagram
  • Slideshare
